What Is DMAE?:

What Is DMAE

DMAE is technically known as  Dimethylaminoethanol and is an analogue to diethylaminoethanol which is a precursor to choline. Choline is the precursor to the excitatory neurotransmitter acetylcholine and it’s believed that DMAE functions by increasing the amount of acetylcholine in the brain. Acetylcholine in the brain is the primary neurotransmitter involved in learning and memory.

DMAE is produced in small quantities naturally in the body and is also found in higher concentrations in fatty fish like salmon, sardines and anchovies. DMAE is also used in pharmaceutical drugs including:

  • Centrophenoxine
  • Lucidril

Who Should Not Take DMAE?:

Who Should Not Take DMAE

DMAE should not be taken by pregnant women as one study in animals found that DMAE may be linked to causing spina bifida. Additionally, there are a number of drugs that should not be mixed with DMAE as they could cause adverse reactions or render the medication ineffective. These drugs include:

  • Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors - A drug that inhibits the breakdown of choline and is most commonly used in dementia patients
  • Anticholinergic Medications - Drugs that inhibit the production of choline like Parkinson’s Disease and COPD.
  • Cholinergic Medications - Similar to DMAe these drugs are designed to increase choline production or mimic the effects of choline in the brain.
  • Anticoagulants - Drugs that thin the blood, preventing the clotting of blood in the bloodstream.

Lastly, those with bipolar disorder, schizofrenia or epilepsy should exercise caution when using DMAE and should make sure to get medical advice prior to using.
