Ginger is a flowering plant that has many benefits when used as a spice or ingested when used in cooking or teas. Ginger has been used in ancient Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Originating in China, ginger made its way to India, and was traded to Europeons who then brought it to the Carribean where it started growing with ease, and eventually got introduced to Westerners.

Ginger, in combination with garlic, has been shown to be a novel treatment for drug resistant bacteria and other pathogens. 

This is most likely due to the active component, a ketone body, gingerol. Gingerols are very similar in structure to capsaicin, one of the beneficial compounds in spicy peppers.
