Did Marilyn Monroe Eat Thermo?

Did you know that Marilyn Monroe ate a diet that is very similar to what we refer to as the Thermo Diet? 

Day In The Life Of Marilyn Monroe:

Making dietary choices back in Monroe’s time seems to have been a lot simpler. There were no grass-fed, organic foods, gluten-free, synthetic sweeteners or low-fat options,, it was just “food”. That being said, grocery stores likely had a lot fewer options, making “healthy” eating a lot easier. While Monroe’s diet likely changed day to day it looks like she had a rather consistent diet day to day.

​​Breakfast:

Monroe’s breakfast seems to be a bit up to debate. In one interview she was quoted saying her breakfast consisted of “a glass of warmed milk with two raw eggs mixed in”, which may have been a part of her dieting/”cleanse” routine. Other sources say she consumed a more balanced breakfast including:

  • Orange juice
  • Stewed prunes
  • Cereal
  • Toast with Butter & milk

Morning Snack:

It’s been said that Monroe had a mid-morning snack of another cup of milk with some crackers.

Lunch:

Like all Thermo ladies (and gentlemen) Monroe loved her carbs. Monroe’s most diverse meal of the deal seems to be her lunch consisting of:

  • Eggs and cottage cheese
  • A baked or mashed potato
  • Spaghetti with tomato or butter
  • Noodles with milk
  • Stale toast or bread with butter
  • Jell-O
  • Cooked Fruit

Afternoon Snack:

Around 3PM Monroe would snack again on another cup of milk and crackers 

Dinner:

Dinner

Monroe’s dinner could be taken right out of the Thermo Diet it consisted of a meat, starch and root or vegetable:

  • Meat - Lean beef,  chicken, lamb, sweetbread, fish, or liver (from beef, chicken or lamb)
  • Starch - Potato or a slice of bread with butter
  • Root or Vegetables - Tomatoes, beets, carrots, spinach, string beans or peas, pureed or strained

Dessert:

Last, but certainly not least, what celebrity doesn't eat dessert? Monroe's dessert normally consisted of:

  • Junket
  • Custard
  • Tapioca Pudding
  • Rice Pudding
  • Baked apple

Nighttime Snack:

As a late, late night snack around 11pm Monroe would often end her night with a glass of good ol' eggnog.

Day In The Life

If you're familiar with the Thermo Diet you'll recognize how similar it is to Marilyn Monroe's day to diet. The Thermo Diet is a high-carbohydrate diet with moderate amounts of fats and protein. The main foods that make up the Thermo Diet are fruits, roots, certain, starches, saturated fats, dairy, and meat particularly those from ruminant animals with some organ meats mixed in.

What's The Point?:

While Marilyn Monroe's name certainly grabs attention, the point is not to "eat like Marilyn Monroe" rather to eat more like your grandparents. Monroe's diet albeit simple, covers all of her nutrient bases and avoids any harmful foods. Her diet and that of our grandmothers have what we are lacking, which is primarily the fat-soluble vitamins & copper. 

By consuming liver or other organ meats once per week you'll satisfy your vitamin A & K requirements with some additional vitamin D and C, plus tons of B vitamins. Adding in some orange juice is a great source of electrolytes like sodium and potassium, Vitamin C (which contains copper) and sugar. Monroe also ate some whole-fat dairy is a great source of the B vitamins and Fat-Soluble Vitamins A, D, K & E. Lastly, Monroe ate a number of carrots daily which certainly helped to keep her digestive tract and intestines in good health and prevented bacterial overgrowth. Plus she fueled herself with a good amount of sugar throughout the day.

One of the major factors behind these ideas are the simplicity behind it. As a society we've gone through tons of health & diet "scare's" including being scared of fat, dairy, carbs, sugar, the list goes on... There were no gluten-free foods, organic, grass-fed, or low-fat milk in these times, it was just the food as is, arguably as they are meant to be. And they ate the whole damn thing! Imagine our hunter-gatherer ancestors throwing away the liver because it didn't taste good. Every part of an animal has a different nutrients within it, the collagenous structures have glycine and proline, the organs contain high amounts of the fat-soluble vitamins, eating the whole animal helps to keep your diet in balance.

We have to make these conscious decisions because we don't live in as simple of times. Not all cows eat grass anymore, many chickens are locked in 1X1 feet cages for the majority of their life and both chicken, pork, and cows are often fed grains like corn and soy instead of their natural food source.When you add in the shear number of synthetic pesticides used in farming today makes buying organic worth it in my opinion (although organic isn't perfect either). And while consuming gluten won't kill us (at least the majority of us) it's best to limit it to special occasions when possible. Last, but not least there were few if any seed or "vegetable" oils in any of the foods that were eaten back then because they had yet to be popularized.

The message of Marilyn Monroe's diet isn't to eat like her or like Christopher Walker, Jayton Miller, or me. The message is to make the best decisions you can when presented with the choices in front of you. And this isn't to say to be "perfect" or strive for perfection either! Maybe, the satisfaction of an occasional fried oreo are worth the health detriments, after all we're human. Live your life, just live it with ownership.
